Edgey Content

I started this Blog with a vague idea that I would share some of my experiences and try to connect with the other Humans out there in the Blogosphere. In one of my early posts The Edge on Muddling Through , I wrote about the "Science of Muddling Through" , or Incremental Planning, and how as I moved through my Blogging journey I would adjust the scope and content of the Blog when it seemed appropriate.

It's been about four months and over forty posts - time for a gut check.

First off I know its spelled Edgy ... but Edgey is meant to contect to me - Sam Edge. So by definition, if I create "Edgey Content" it will be content based on me and my experiences  Hopefully it will be a little edgy as well.

I always struggle when I have to answer the question: "What is your Blog about?" I don't know how to describe what I write about because the process is so random. I pick a title "The Edge on this or that..." and run with it. Often I have no idea what its about until I'm done. Now that I have some content established I can look at the body of work from a distance and see what it is that I am doing.

I took the time today to look back at:

  • what I was trying to do when I started,
  • what I have actually done and
  • how the two line up.

It was interesting to read my Posts from the beginning in September right up to present day. As I read  I could see where my writing was at its best and when I seemed to struggle. When I try to share on what my thoughts are about a subject I flail around the page making more of a mess than anything else. The more I stick to my experiences relating to a subject, the better it translates on the page.

So I will do more writing based on experiences and less on thoughts.

My goal is to create "Experience Based Content". All that I have that has substance and weight to offer my readers is my experiences. You know the saying about opinions? Everyone has one ... and really who cares?

My Blog is not meant to tell You what to do - its meant to tell You what I did.

Maybe you can use it, maybe you can't - but if I stick to my Experience, not only will my content be at its best - I can never be wrong. Sounds good to me.

In the context of Experience, the subject of my Blog is Self Improvement.

I can add Self Help, Personal Development, Personal Growth and other synonyms for trying to do better at Life but - who really cares?  I Googled "Experiential Self Improvement" and, among other things, came up with - Experiential Knowledge. Experiential Knowledge is simply, "knowledge based on experience as opposed to knowledge based on thinking."

I like it!

I'm not going to stop thinking altogether - but what I will do is when I come up with a thought I will use my experiences as a base by which to establish the knowledge that I share with the Humans. By doing this I can guarantee that my content will always be Authentic, Unique, Edgey and Edgy!

My Blog's description is: "I hope to help others by sharing my experience, strength and hope and trying to do the next right thing."

Based on what I have uncovered from this "Gut Check" - this description holds up. The subject of my Blog will expand as my knowledge base expands. For instance, Blogging and Writing are two of the key tools that I use to relate my knowledge on self improvement to the other Humans. As my Writing and Blogging experience grows and improves I will have more Experiential Knowledge to share this with my readers.  So that's what you can Expect from "Notes from the Edge" moving forward.

Authentic and Edgey posts about my experiences and how they relate to getting through life and doing the next right thing.

Before I sign out. I haven't really told a lot of my story because, well - who really gives a shit? But as I write this Post about Authenticity and Experience I am thinking that there is value in letting my story out where it adds to the depth and quality of content.

My story covers a lot of ground - abuse, addiction, abandonment, love, compassion, respect, success and failure. All the messy inconveniences of Life.  These are experiences that I brag about sometimes and hide from at other times  - the truly authentic experiences of my Life that have taught me my most valuable lessons.

These are the experiences that are most valuable for providing content that is Edgey and Edgy.

Respectfully, from the Edge ...

  1. Hey Sam,

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I completely agree with you that the journey to becoming successful is just as important as actually being successful. Even though I know that, I still have a hard time actually putting that into practice. Sometimes I get bogged down with the idea that i'm not there already, and forget to stop and view the scenery :). I will work on that.

As for your self-improvement journey. I think that is great! Everyone should strive to be better in every aspect of their lives. I try to do that as well. I agree that basing things on your knowledge and your experiences will really add a flare of uniqueness to your blog. :)
